A Step-by-Step Guide to Building a New Home

A home is more than just a building. It represents a family’s dreams and aspirations. It is not every day that you build your home. You need to prepare well before embarking on your journey of building a new home.

Building a new home can be both exciting and challenging. Many individuals (especially potential first-time homeowners) are completely overwhelmed by the possibilities of construction nightmares.

Here are steps to building your home from the moment your contractor breaks ground on your plot.

Laying the Foundation

After you obtain the necessary approvals, your contractor’s team will prepare your construction site. Using a backhoe and a bulldozer, the crew will remove rocks, debris, and trees from the site. The area is leveled and wooden boards are placed around the edges to form a container.

Concrete is poured into this container to form the foundation and footings are installed. If you want to have a well, it should be drilled at this point. Concrete will need time to cure. During the curing period, there will be no activity on your construction site.

After the concrete cures, a city inspector will visit the site to perform an inspection. During their visit, the inspector will check if foundation components are up to code and installed properly. After the inspection, your contractor will remove the frames.

Framing

In this stage, the crew will erect the support members (known as the skeleton or shell of a house) for the walls and ceilings. The frame will be covered with a layer of plywood. To prevent liquid from infiltrating the structure, the wood will be covered with a house wrap.

Complete Rough Roofing, Plumbing, HVAC, and Electrical

In this stage, different groups of contractors will work together. One group of contractors will install roofing and siding, while electrical contractors will start running wires. Plumbing contractors will install sewer lines and water supply lines for each fixture. Your HVAC contractor will install the HVAC. An electrician will install receptacles for your outlets, switches, and lights and run wires from the breaker panel to every receptacle.

At the end of this stage, plumbing, framing, and mechanical systems will be inspected for compliance with building codes.

Insulation and Drywall Installation

The right insulation material for your home will improve the energy efficiency of your home.

Popular insulation materials include fiberglass, concrete blocks, and cellulose.

No matter which insulation material you choose, make sure there are no gaps in the insulation. Outside walls should be covered equally. Once your insulation is in place, the drywall will be installed.

Interior Finishing

In the final stage, the crew will install doors, windows, flooring, baseboards, and decorative trim. The team will also build your porch and patio.
